In 2015, at Black Pixel with fellow designer Vince De Asis, we worked with Funny or Die to help them bring their weather app to life. We kicked off our project with 2 full days of brainstorming with the client on what the app would be, how it would work and what it might look like.
After we worked through what the app would do, we worked through some very rough directions with the client by our side so we could move fast and a bit loose, but also to find the right interactions.
Funny or Die wanted an icon system that was both funny and sleek. We created a system that felt at home within iOS, yet still felt like there was some humor and playfulness.
We wanted something in the app to feel different than a location photo or a simple color background. We wanted the app to feel vibrant with colors that would reflect the temprature outside. We focused on colorful graidents that changed based on the changing temprature.
During intial loading of the applicaiton, the background colors change dyanamiclly based on the temprature provided. This brought some richness to the content.
In the end, we created an app that had the humor fitting to Funny or Die’s brand, and yet still had the feeling of a sleek utility app they were looking for.
